What do you see in the photo? Where do you think this photo was taken, what role does the person in the photo have, what do you think they are saying and who are they talking to?

The Right Rev Mariann Edgar Budde is the Episcopal Bishop of Washington in USA.

What role does a Bishop have?

Mariann went viral this week following an address she gave at the inauguration of President Donald Trump. Mariann led the prayer service as part of the inauguration.

What would you expect a Bishop to talk about during a prayer service, what do you think the new president expected to hear during the service?

During the service, the Bishop said the following:

"In the name of God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people jn our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and Independent families. Some who fear for their lives.

They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbours, They are faithful members of our churches, mosques, synagogues."

What is your response to these words, why is the Bishop saying this?
Why does she say there are lesbian, gay and transgender children in "Democratic, Republican and Independent families"?
Why do you think she says some of these children are fearing for their lives?
"They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation"- what is this about?
"The vast majority of immigrants are not criminals." - why does the Bishop make that point?
"Churches, mosques, synagogues."- why list all those different places of worship?
Would you expect a church service to be so supportive of LGBT+ rights?
What does this show about ideas shifting and changing over time?

Donald Trump was sitting in the front row when the Bishop made the speech.

What do you think he thought of the service?

Some have argued that the bishop should not have used the inauguration to make these points.

What do you think?

Later the Bishop said in an interview,
"I wanted to emphasise respecting the honour and dignity of every human being. I was trying to counter the narrative that is so divisive and polarising and in which real people are being harmed."

What is a narrative, what is a counter narrative?
How can a narrative be divisive and polarising?

Some might say this discussion we are having now is inappropriate for a school setting.

Are we being political?
Is it ok to have these discussions in school?
What are the two sides of this argument?

Which British value is this about?
Why is this about No Outsiders?

Since the clip of Mariann went viral, she has received a lot of hate through social media. One politician from America called for her to be deported. Should you wish to write to her at her church to give your support and tell her how our school works to respect the honour and dignity of every human being, the address is:
The Right Rev, Mariann Edgar Budd
Episcopal Church House
Mount St. Alban
