Gender and patriarchy

What do you see in the photo?
whare is it? what do you think the story is? Can you translate the sign? (Jenni with you #it's over)

Hundreds of people protested in Marid last week. Why were they protesting?

They were marching in support of Jenni Hermoso after Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish FA, kissed her without consent following their win at the women's world cup.

Banners at the protest read, "Sexists and gentlemen, sports are for everyone" and "Out with macho federations" - what do these mean?

Rubiales has been suspended for 90 days but he has refused to resign. He claims Jenni Hermoso initiated the kiss. Rubiales's entire coaching staff  have resigned in the last week in support of Jenni and 81 players have said they will not play until a change is implemented. Many in Spain are seeing this as an opportunity to rid the country of institutional sexism.

- what happened at the medal ceremony?
- kissing happens in lots of cultures, is this an over-reaction?
- have you ever seen a male football player kissed on his lips at a medal ceremony?
- why isn't it ok?
- what is institutional sexism? can you think of an example? (you could mention the Barbie movie here - what was that about)

Watch this interview with Ella Toone https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/66619588
- why are the lionesses getting involved?
- the statement from the Lionesses talks about a "sexist and patriarchal organisation" what does that mean?
- is Luis kissing Jenni an example of patriarchy? why?
- One of the placards in the clip says, "Not all men but too many" - what do you think of that line? Is that an effective placard?
- Ella says that even with an apology, Luis should resign; "It's much bigger than that now." Is she right? Do you agree? If he apologised now would this all go away?

- what do you think these events show us about society today and gender equality?
- do we have gender equality in 2023? Explain your answer.

- what do we say at our school about gender equality?
- The photo shows men and women on the protest. Why are men on the protest too if the march is against patriarchy?
- how is gender protected in law? (make the distinction in the Equality Act it is your sex that is protected) what other groups are protected under the equality act?
- what can we do now at our school to make sure there is no sexist and patriarchal ethos?
- why is this about no outsiders?
